Today we took long time customer Bill out for one of his two summer charters. Usually, after our customers ask about any shark sightings, the questions eventually get around to any good fish stories that we might have. At that point, Captain Joe and I usually give each other a wink and a nod and tell our most popular story. The one that makes Bill famous. He comes from NY every year and summers in Wellfleet with his wife Ellen, who tries to relax from another year as the Dean of Columbia Law School. Ellen drops Bill off and I drive him home after the charter. Two years ago Bill had a big Striper on the line, the pole slipped out of his hand and into Cape Cod Bay. Working quickly we backed up the Nauset just as the Striper paused and the the rod handle popped to the surface. With a well placed gaff swing we secured the rod…..with the Striper still attached!! The picture of Bill with the fish is under “Trips & Rates”….and he is forever famous!
